A new study published in the journal Cell Stem Cell focuses on the development and maturation of human sperm stem cells and has led to a better understanding of how they function. Researchers from the University of Utah’s Huntsman Cancer Institute started this initiative in order to gain insight into male infertility and cancer.
It’s the first time that such an in-depth look at the process of sperm development related to human stem cells has occurred, according to the research. In the past, mice have been the focus of study. The scientists believe that this study will lead to better diagnostics and treatment of male infertility along with the potential to one day understand the genetic changes that may cause cancers that are linked to male infertility.
Past studies have shown a link between male infertility and a variety of cancers, especially testicular cancer. Other cancers for which men facing infertility have shown to be at higher risk include:
- Melanoma
- Prostate cancer
- Bladder cancer
- Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
- Thyroid cancer
