According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, MS, or Multiple Sclerosis, is defined as “an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body.”
Symptoms of MS vary between patients and in severity and type. In addition, each person’s symptoms change over time. Some of the most common symptoms include:
- Fatigue
- Difficulty walking
- Numbness and tingling
- Stiffness and muscle spasms, most commonly in the legs
- Weakened muscles
- Vision problems
- Sexual problems
- Bowel problems
- Chronic pain
- Cognitive problem
- Emotional problems
As you can see, life with MS can be very difficult. Tumors, breathing problems, and difficulty swallowing and speaking can all be symptoms as well.
Current Treatment
Unfortunately, the cause of Multiple Sclerosis still has not been discovered, nor has a cure. Current treatments involves slowing the disease’s progress, treating relapses and attacks, managing the symptoms, and improving functionality and safety for a better quality of life. Now, new research shows that stem cells could play a role in helping patients with MS.
Stem cells are any cells that can both make copies of themselves and become many different types of specialized cells. These stem cells shows promise for potentially helping to slow the symptoms of MS and even repair some of the damage to the nervous system.
Stem cell therapy is also being used to help with other immunological and autoimmune diseases including:
- Crohn’s disease
- Diabetes
- Ulcerative colitis
- Relapsing polychondritis
- Scleroderma
- Lupus
- Thyroid conditions
