Are Stem Cells the Key to the Fountain of Youth?

In Aging and Longevity by KimL1143

As children, we have an almost constant desire to be older. We want to do all the things grownups do and go all the places they go. Once we reach middle age, however, our focus shits to stopping the aging process. We look for home remedies, creams, treatments and procedures that promise to help us look and feel younger in no time. The truth is, most of those promises can’t deliver because we have yet to discover the source of exactly why and how we age.

New research has revealed that stem cells in the brain may hold the answers. The hypothalamus is a complex area of the brain that connects the nervous systems with the endocrine system and helps regulate functions including:

  • Emotions
  • Sleep
  • Body temperature
  • Appetite
  • Blood pressure

It’s in this area of the brain, the hypothalamus, that scientists from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City focused their research. They discovered that specific neural stem cells may be responsible for the aging process. The study examined these stem cells in mice and shows that the cells began to decline rapidly as the mice aged. When new stem cells were placed in the hypothalamus of middle-aged mice, researchers found the aging process slowed down and in some areas stopped altogether.

Of course, much more research will need to be done before these discoveries become treatment plans, but it’s a great discovery in the field of stem cell therapy and the aging process. In the meantime, we offer stem cell therapy here at the San Francisco Stem Cell Treatment Center that targets the effects of aging.
